Having been pursuing a solo career since 2014, Cobi received some attention and developed a following after releasing his ambient, blues/indie single, "Don't You Cry For Me," last year. Since then, his fans have enthusiastically waited for more of his music to come out. He recently responded with newest release, entitled Songs From The Ashes, Pt. 1, that features three tracks. With these songs, he seemed to continue in the direction of taking elements of folk, blues, and sometimes rock, and mixing them with some electronic music so that it embodies a rustic yet almost modern feel.
"Goddess" goes into the seductive side of blues, while giving it an electronic style. Cobi takes it slow as he longingly describes what it's like being at the mercy of his "goddess;" being completely under her control in seemingly the most beautiful way. "Nobody Opened The Door" starts off soft and melancholy with only vocals, guitar, and light reverberation. Gradually, the song builds until vocals and instrumentals break out in full force. Based on Cobi's explanation to Paste Magazine, the lyrics are about letting go of a love that's forced to end. It's as though the changing dynamics represent the process of realizing that the relationship is ending, feeling the harsh emotions that come from the departure, and at last successfully being able to accept what happened, let go, and move on. "Underneath" is the most upbeat track with lyrics of which the exact meaning could be debated. However, ultimately Cobi tells us that sooner or later, we all end up underground. The song starts with a somewhat haunting and eerie verse that leads into a vigorous, head-bobbing, hand-clapping chorus that grows in strength as the song continues. As this release is labeled as only Part 1, it's undoubted that listeners can anticipate more "songs from the ashes" that will continue to display Cobi's soulful and passionate music.
